Support - Getting Started: How do I get an EIN (US taxpayer) ?
Updated 20 July 2022
If you do not have a US taxpayer ID or a US physical address, please visit this article that explains how to get an EIN as an international founder.
You need an EIN in order to set up your company's bank account and credit card(s). To apply for an EIN, please visit this link on the IRS website.
We've worked on an easy, step-by-step guide that will help you go through the EIN application:
Step 1. Identify the legal structure.
Your brand new Capbase entity is a Delaware C Corporation.
Please note that if you incorporated on Capbase, "Started a new business" is likely applicable. But please select the one that suits your situation.
Step 2. Authenticate yourself.
You will need to add your personal information including your SSN or ITIN. If you do not have either identifier, please visit this article for more information on how to apply for an EIN without a US taxpayer ID.
If you are not a corporate officer of the company, you will need to complete an additional form (SS-4) and follow the ensuing steps designating you as a person to receive an EIN on the taxpayer's behalf.
Step 3. Your physical address.
You will need to include the physical location of your corporation. This may or may not be in Delaware, but it has to be within the United States.
*Important note*: While the Capbase C Corporation's registered agent is located in Delaware, that is NOT the address you will enter here.
Step 4: Corporation details.
Much of this will come from your newly stamped Articles of Incorporation. Please be sure to note the differences between your physical location and where the corporation's AoI was filed.
Step 5: Confirmation.
You'll need to confirm your details and choose whether you'd like to receive a digital version of the EIN letter or a physical version by post.
Since the physical version may take up to a few weeks to be sent to your location, we highly recommend choosing the digital version so you'll be ready with the documentation needed to open a bank account.
The IRS recommends that you print a copy of this application for your records.
Step 6: After you receive your letter.
You'll sign in to your account and click on the "Add information" button. Then, you'll add your EIN number > upload the file > and complete the filing.
This will ensure a copy is always easily found in your Capbase Document Room.
Once you have full access to the platform, the EIN letter will be located in the Compliance Calendar in the left sidebar under Past Filings.
